THE RED BLANKET

JAMES WAGSTAFF

Colt, a teenage boy in foster care, was walking down the street when he tripped, falling and bumping his head. He lay unconscious for what seemed like hours. When he woke up, he was wrapped in a musty red blanket.

Colt figured someone must have thought he was homeless and covered him with it. The blanket was faded and worn, so he chucked it into a garbage bin. But as he turned to walk on, the blanket suddenly appeared on the ground in front of him.

“How did that happen?” he wondered, as the blanket slid between his feet and tripped him.

However, before he landed on the ground, the blanket lifted into the air and caught him.

“What the heck? A flying blanket,” Colt said.

“What can I do for you?” the blanket asked.

“You speak—I must be dreaming!” the boy exclaimed.

“No, you aren’t dreaming. My name is Lincon, and I am yours to command.”

“You have a name?” Colt asked.

“Of course I do! You sound surprised.”

“Well, it’s not every day that I meet a talking blanket. Okay, Lincon, my name is Colt.”

“Where would you like to travel to? I can bring you anywhere,” Lincon proclaimed.

“I’ve always wanted to travel to England,” Colt said.

“To England we go then.”

The blanket scooped Colt off his feet and soon they were flying. The higher the blanket went, the more scared Colt became. But after a while he got used to it.

Lincon flew fast. Together they passed many trees, cornfields, and buildings. They flew across the ocean in record time. The blanket was slower than a plane but much more fun. It never faltered because it was the only thing between Colt and the ocean.

When they reached England, Lincon suggested that Colt pack him in a duffle bag, so as not to arouse suspicion.

They passed some of the nation’s most beautiful farmlands and castles. Colt saw the Big Ben clock tower and heard it ring loudly when it struck the hour. He also saw Stonehenge, the great ruins themselves, and Buckingham Palace, where the royals live.

Colt didn’t have any money for food, so he persuaded a restaurant owner to hire him as a dishwasher in exchange for meals. The owner agreed and fed him delicious pork chops, soda pop, string beans, and mashed potatoes. After two weeks of washing dishes and touring the sights, Colt was ready to head home.

“You will fly me back to Canada, won’t you?” he asked the blanket.

“Yes, but there is something you should know,” Lincon said.

“I knew it—it’s always too good to be true.”

“It isn’t that bad really,” Lincon said.

Colt sighed a second time. “Okay, spill it.

“For every hour of flight, you will age one day. You see, I am a magical blanket. I’ve lived for over five hundred years. I have had many owners. As of this moment, I have taken twenty days out of your life. If you use me too much, you will grow old extremely quickly. You may even die if you travel on me too much.”

“Can I stop whenever I want?”

“Yes, but it’s not that easy—flight becomes an addiction.
